Dead.
Vickie sighed. She knew it was coming, but that didnât make her feel any better about the worthless brick her phone had become. One feed update had finally been one update too many. She was truly alone now, cut off from the rest of the world by a dead phone and four feet of snow on every side.
And inside?
âPeople say Hawaiiâs expensive,â Alex droned on, âBut thatâs bullshit, because anything thatâs worth having is expensive. What really matters is making sure you that the value is there for the cost. And I know you get it, Vick. The beaches. The climate. The miles between you and any asshole you donât want to see. You canât put a price on all that.â
Couldnât agree more, Vickie thought. She hadnât replied to a single one of Alexâs many, many proclamations about the virtues of South Pacific life, but she could drink to that one. She knocked back another shot of vodka. The alcohol had finally gotten away from her. She was well and truly drunk now. Drunk and getting drunker, heaping fuel on the simmering fire growing hotter and hotter in her gut.
I canât believe Iâm with these fucking idiots again. Sheâd gotten away. May 29th, 2013- hereâs your diploma Ms. Fields, and hereâs a letter certifying you never have to see any of these assholes ever again. Weâll forward your ten-year reunion invite to the nearest trash can.
Vodka. Sheâd kept that promise in college and onwards and upwards into her professional life. No frat boys. No sororities. No more toxic masculinity. Just guys with blue hair and girls with no hair; â80s punk rock fans and â90s sci-fi fans. And gay people. Actual, real life fucking gay people.
No snow warnings in South Carolina, but sheâd holed up with friends during torrential rain storms, and nobody smashed face-first into a wall like a fucking toddler. They talked about movies or played Cards Against Humanity. Sheâd been alone with her friend Ashley during one of those storms, and she certainly didnât run away screaming the first time she kissed another girl.
Rum. Yet, somehow, here she was with the same idiot meatheads sheâd happily outgrown. No, not somehow. She knew exactly how. Bridge. Bridget Teresa Fallon. Bridge, who had somehow settled for the stupidest, meatest head of them all.
Gin. No, not Gin. SoCo. Where was Bridget anyway? They couldnât still be looking for that fuckboy Tommy. No, she was probably off seeing what steroid abuse had left between Chrisâ legs.
Vickie snorted out liquor and snickered to herself.
Tequila. She needed to get Bridge away from here was what she had to do. Too much time in Pine Hollow did something bad to your brain. Vickie had only been back a day, and she already felt it working at her nerve endings.
Ah, speak of the happy couple! Bridget and Chris had returned to the cafeteria. Jesus, they were actually holding hands.
âYo!â Alex shouted. âWhat took you guys so long? Is Tommy still holed up somewhere?â
âDonât worry about him,â Chris said.
